Que Afeto é Esse?
Affect is more than just a bond. It is a transformative force capable of altering the way we perceive the world, how we act, and how we relate to one another. Often used—to the point of exhaustion—as a synonym for the connection between two people, mediated by a shared feeling, the word "affect" is being stripped of a deeper, alternative meaning. Affect is also that which touches something or someone, catalyzing transformation: a sensation, an attitude, an emotion, or even a simple physiological reaction—one not always registered by our conscious mind. Seeking to reclaim and broaden the scope of the term, the 6th edition of the exhibition ‘Contemporâneas Vivara’ brings together works created exclusively by women. The exhibition features pieces from existing collections, previously unseen works, and site-specific installations. It serves as an invitation to observe the invisible layers of existence and to respond—each in one’s own way—to the question that gives the exhibition its title: after all, what kind of affect is this?
Janet Vollebregt’s work for this exhibition is an outdoor reinterpretation of the work she made for Museum de Lakenhal in 2022, for the exhibition ‘Imagine Intuition’. Artists were asked to express their view on intuition and bring the public closer to understanding intuition or tapping into it. Janet Vollebregt views intuition as the ability to tap into collective consciousness, as described by Karl Gustav Jung. With this works she invites the public to ground and at the same time tune into this field of collective consciousness, to be able to use one’s inner radar and pick up signals that are of priority. You are Present is a nurturing sphere that intends to have a calming and grounding effect on those that sit down in it. At the same time, the installation represents a three dimensional mandala, facilitating the awareness of being part of an energetic field.
